Frequently Asked Questions: Pregnancy Edition

 Answering common questions about pregnancy.

What are the symptoms of being 3 days pregnant?

None. There are no symptoms at 3 days pregnant because it’s too early in the journey to notice any. However, if you have missed your period for about a week, you should take a pregnancy test to confirm.

Are there signs of pregnancy at 1 week?

No, there are not. Implantation usually occurs about two weeks after fertilisation. It may sometimes be accompanied by light spotting (bleeding), but not in all cases.

How do I know if I have a cryptic pregnancy?

The only way to know is by doing a pregnancy blood test. If you’re worried that you may have a cryptic pregnancy, it’s best to do a blood test in multiple laboratories (at least three centres) to verify your pregnancy status.

Is white discharge before my expected period a sign of pregnancy?

No, it is not. Having a clear or cloudy, sticky discharge before your expected period is a result of ovulation, not a sign of pregnancy.

How do I know if I have an ectopic pregnancy?

Through an ultrasound. Symptoms may include sharp, sudden, and intense pain in the tummy, dizziness, fainting, nausea, and looking very pale — but these can easily be mistaken for symptoms of other illnesses. This is why antenatal care is important. Your gynaecologist can monitor your progress and make recommendations based on observations.

What causes ectopic pregnancy?

It is usually due to one or more risk factors such as:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Previous ectopic pregnancy
  • Being above 35 years of age
  • Fertility treatments
  • Getting pregnant while using an IUD
  • Problems with the fallopian tubes (e.g., blockage or narrowing)

The exact cause is usually determined after a thorough examination by a gynaecologist.

What is preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is a life-threatening pregnancy complication characterised by high blood pressure and high protein levels in the urine. It usually occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Can I have preeclampsia in my second pregnancy if I didn’t have it in my first?

Yes, you can. Although preeclampsia is more common in first-time mothers, it can still occur in women who have had previous pregnancies.

When should I start antenatal care?

As early as 4 weeks into your pregnancy. Starting early allows any potential issues with you or your baby to be detected and managed quickly.

With just ₦20,000, you can register for our antenatal care and receive quality medical attention.

What does the ₦20,000 antenatal fee cover?

It covers the initial set of blood tests, including:

  • PCV
  • Urinalysis
  • HIV test
  • Hepatitis B & C tests
  • Syphilis test
  • Blood group & genotype

For subsequent visits, consultation costs ₦1,000 per visit. You’ll also need to do PCV and urinalysis every 4 weeks, which cost ₦1,000 each
