When did it happen?
The first time I had a yeast infection was back in secondary school. I was about 12 years old, and it was such an embarrassing experience because I was in boarding school. The school had to call my parents to pick me up.
My dad was upset because he thought I had contracted something through sex but that wasn’t the case, which the doctor later confirmed.
Oh wow, what actually Happened?
My soap had finished, so I borrowed my bunkmate’s soap for a few days until visiting day when my parents could restock my supplies.
After a while, I noticed discomfort, itching, irritation, and a burning sensation. I didn’t know what was happening, so I kept washing with water when I was in class and with soap when I was in the hostel. Ironically, the same soap that was making things worse.
The itching became unbearable. I would excuse myself from class to itch, and even tried to “discreetly” do it in class. Eventually, I went to the school clinic. The nurse immediately called my parents because the clinic wasn’t equipped to handle the case.
At the hospital, the doctor asked a few questions and discovered the scented soap had thrown off my vaginal pH balance, leading to the yeast infection.
The doctor only asked questions?
Oh no, the Doctor was did a vaginal swab. lol, tough times mehn.
What was your treatment like?
have you had Yeast Infection again since then?
What did you learn from that experience?
Never use scented soaps to wash your vagina. My gynaecologist always reminds me — water is enough.
Speak up early. Once you notice anything unusual, no matter how small, see a doctor immediately.
Most importantly, unlearn the shame. Yeast infections can happen to anyone. It’s not a sign of being promiscuous or dirty.
